Is Kirk Ferentz the most overrated coach in college football? Pt. 2

The first part of this Iowa news series received such a warm reception by Hawkeye Nation, hopefully part two promises more of the same. Apparently, Hawkeye football in Iowa is more popular than corn subsidies. Iowans from Sioux City to Waterloo either left comments or shot-off emails, sticking up for their head coach, with some using a few choice words to do so.  Nonetheless, I would not expect any different from any true college football fan in coming to the aid and defense of their...

The Riverboat Gambler’s Final Hand

Three years removed from winning his first and only BCS National Championship, LSU skipper Les Miles could be entering his last season as head coach of the Tigers. Miles assumed head coaching duties on January 3, 2005, when current Alabama head coach Nick Saban bolted Baton Rouge to try his hand in the NFL. Miles got off to a red-hot start by going 11-2 in his first season as head coach and earned a trip to Atlanta to represent...

Is Kirk Ferentz the most overrated coach in college football?

When the topic of overrated college football coaches comes up, names such as Jim Tressel, Mark Richt, Rich Rodriguez and Les Miles are often tossed around. Out of these four coaches, two, (Tressel and Miles) have a BCS National Championship trophy to show. However, Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz is rarely mentioned in such conversations. Why is this? I get that he and Iowa have always been media darlings, and I understand his Hawkeyes have been the proverbial fly in the ointment for Penn State...

Tim James gets F-Bombed

Football and politics go about as well together as Oprah Winfrey and Lean Cuisine. One does not have to look further than the current United States Senate vs. BCS spat going on right now to see this. Most recently, Paul Finebaum, a regionally well-renowned Alabama sports talk show host and columnist, may have thrown a wrench in Alabama gubernatorial hopeful Tim James’s election bid. During yesterday’s afternoon edition of  the Paul Finebaum Show, Finebaum announced on-air that there was a rumor circulating that James (an...

Saban to be bronzed

There is no word on how long Nick Saban will actually coach in Tuscaloosa as his track record indicates he likes to move around a lot (since 2000, he has coached for Michigan State, LSU, Miami Dolphins, and Alabama). However, the University of Alabama has found a way to immortalize Coach Nick Saban by the form of bronze. The University will unveil a bronze statue in his honor for winning the national championship game against Texas. The statue will...

The High School Bicycle Wins Again

Now that Nick Saban has won his 2nd. NCAA football championship, let the guessing begin as to how long he stays in Tuscaloosa. College football’s resident gypsy and his Crimson Tide won the 2010 BCS National Championship game tonight beating Texas 37-21. Saban’s not known to be one to lay down his roots anywhere for too long. After bringing ‘Bama back to national prominence, will Saban get the itch and decide to bolt from Tuscaloosa? Mal Moore, the Alabama...

The Longhorns will Roll over the Tide

The BCS National Championship Game airs tonight with a match-up of #1 Alabama v. #2 Texas. The experts are all saying that Alabama should win this game (some say by 10 though the line is hovering around 4). As it stands, the SEC is 5- 0 in the BCS National Championship Game with most saying the Tide will safely make it to 6-0. However, in the words of Lee Corso, NOT SO FAST, MY FRIEND! The Longhorns are averaging over 40...

Upshaw’s Law

Alabama’s Courtney Upshaw has been court ordered to take anger management classes for a misdemeanor domestic violence and harassment charge. The charge stems from an incident this past August where both Upshaw and his girlfriend were arrested for an altercation that occurred in the parking lot of Alabama’s campus recreation center. From the beginning, Upshaw has had the support of his coach Nick Saban, who believes that the incident was a lapse in judgement by Upshaw, and that Upshaw is a good...
