Mangino eats food, not words

The times sure have changed in Lawrence, Kansas. When head coach Mark Mangino was sporting a 12-1 record and an Orange Bowl victory over Virginia Tech, not a peep was coming out about his questionable coaching philosophy or his temper. Now that the Jayhawks have tasted success, they expect nothing but the same results. However, after pouring a significant amount of money into revamping the football program and facilities, the team came out strong starting 5-0. Then reality set...

Dr. Bob says pass on VaTech Game

Dr. Bob dissects the VaTech v. Nebraska game: #13 VIRGINIA TECH (-5.0) 29 #19 Nebraska 24 3:30 PM (EST) Saturday, Sep-19 VIRGINIA TECH (-5) 29 Nebraska 24 I wasn’t a big fan of Virginia Tech heading into the season, as their offense was worse than average last season and appeared to be worse than average heading into this season. My beliefs were confirmed in the Hokies’ game against Alabama, as Tech managed just 157 total yards on 3.1 yards per...

The ACC Embarrassment

The ACC Embarrassment

The Matador received heavy criticism for his early preseason bashing of the ACC.  If we learned anything from week 1, The Matador wasn’t too far off the mark. The two inexcusable beatings landed at the hands of Duke losing to Richmond 16-24 and lowly UVA being ousted by in-state rival William & Mary 14-26. Another game that set the conference back was Cal thumping Maryland 52-13. The ACC did have some close games that came down to 4th quarter...

JoePa’s Coming to D.C.

Penn St. and Indiana University have agreed to play a conference game in the Nation’s Capitol next season. The two will face off in a Big Ten contest at Washington’s FedEx Field on November 20th, 2010. The original game was to be played at Indiana but a nice 3 million dollar payout was enough to change IU’s mind. The game is sure to attract a number of Penn St. fans as many alumni live in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Penn St. has quite a...

Profanity Pays

Profanity Pays

In an effort to create a more Singapore type atmosphere, Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer is implementing the no potty-mouth rule while on the job. This means coaches and staff cannot say any vulgar or profane words in front of other coaches, staff, and especially players during meetings, practices, workouts, etc. It’s not enough for his staff to say, “yes sir, I accept your dumba$$ rule,” rather he is going to levy fines. The fines can range anywhere from $10, $20,...

Evans Out for the Season

Darren Evans, last year’s Orange Bowl MVP, suffered a season ending ACL tear during Virginia Tech’s practice yesterday. This is a huge loss to the Hokies as Evans set numerous conference and school records last year as a freshman. His breakout performance of the  season came against Maryland when he rushed for a school best 253 yards. He played a large role in VT’s conference and BCS bowl victories and expectations for him in Blacksburg and in the ACC were...

Boise State is Coming to FedEx Field

Boise State and Virginia Tech have inked a deal to play at FedEx Field on October 2, 2010. This is coming off of the most recent news of Syracuse backing down from Virginia Tech. This will be the first match-up between these two programs. Virginia Tech will be the home team and will have the television rights. Meanwhile, Boise State will receive an estimated payout of $1.25 million to play the Hokies. This is a great match-up and venue...

The Orange back down from Virginia Tech

The Orange back down from Virginia Tech

Syracuse had an abysmal 3-9 record last season. Their highlight was a surprise victory at Notre Dame 24-23. With Doug Marrone stepping in as head coach, he is making an immediate change with the team’s schedule. As of past, the Orange have scheduled some very difficult teams and their record is reflecting the consequence. This season, they open up with the Big 10 against Minnesota, at Penn State, then Northwestern. Probably not the best scheduling decision by athletic director Rob Edson. To...
