Lauren Luttrell’s kick falls short

In the wake of LSU’s soccer sensation Mo Isom failing to make the cut to kick for the Tigers, Virginia Tech’s Lauren Luttrell also fell short in her quest.  Yesterday, the Hokies held kicking tryouts in which Luttrell was one of 10 kickers trying to make the team.   The former high school star athlete, made seven of eight field goal attempts and advanced to the second round beating out three male counterparts.  Unfortunately, at the end of the day,...

Arrest warrant issued for Marcus Vick

If it’s not Michael Vick headlining the police blotter, it’s his brother Marcus Vick making the front page. Newport News Circuit Judge David Pugh issued an arrest warrant earlier today for the former Virginia Tech football star Marcus Vick for failing to turn himself in to the Newport News City Jail. Vick was court ordered to report to jail by 5 p.m. on Monday to serve his 10 day sentence for contempt of court. However, Vick never showed up....

After two failed attempts, Frank Beamer is giving the restaurant business one more shot

Coming off a disappointing 20-23 Sugar Bowl loss to Michigan, Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer wants to shelve football momentarily and focus on the culinary arts. This summer, Coach Beamer anticipates opening his new restaurant, Beamer’s 25, in Roanoke, Virginia, anchored next to the newly renovated apartments in the Lofts at West Station. A soft opening was held on Wednesday night where it was announced that Beamer’s 25 will be open to the public later in June. The...

ACC disappoints as bowl season ends with 2-6 record

Following West Virginia’s 70-33 rout of 14th ranked Clemson in last night’s Discover Orange Bowl, the ACC is a paltry 2-6 in bowl season play. This record marks the lowest winning percentage for AQ conferences for the 2011 season. It could have been worse, but thanks to Florida State’s heroic efforts in the Champs Sports Bowl edging Notre Dame 18-14 and NC State’s TD victory over Louisville 31-24, the ACC secured two much needed wins. To be fair, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech...

Another ACC team struggles to sell BCS bowl tickets

First it was reported Virginia Tech is falling short of selling its allotment for the 2012 Allstate Sugar Bowl costing the school a significant amount of money, now it looks like Clemson is in the same financial predicament. The Tigers are projected to take a $185,000 hit just to play in the 2011 Orange Bowl. This is not good news for Clemson considering it is the program’s first major bowl appearance in 30 years. Clemson received $1.75 million in...

Virginia Tech struggles to sell BCS tickets, students guilt tripped

Virginia Tech is having difficulties in selling its allotment of 17,500 tickets for the 2012 Allstate Sugar Bowl. As of Monday evening, Tech only sold about 9,500 tickets. This is considerably low considering Tech’s reputation of traveling well and garnering strong fan support. In a desperate attempt to boost ticket sales, Tech’s top brass asked, if not guilted, fans to purchase proxy tickets. “The Athletics Department is asking Hokie fans that cannot make this year’s Allstate Sugar Bowl to...

Georgia Tech’s Attaochu gets a slap on the wrist for punching Virginia Tech’s Thomas in the face

College football is all about winning, and when a star player breaks a rule, there is a direct correlation between the talent of the player and the suspension assessed. Case in point, during Thursday night’s game against Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech LB  Jeremiah Attaochu (6-3, 235 lbs.) threw a flagrant punch at Hokie QB Logan Thomas citing an “overdose of adrenaline. Attaochu was flagged with a personal foul for the hit, but was not thrown out of the game....

10 football programs that could benefit from conference realignment

The impending move of Texas A&M to the SEC ushers the captivating conference expansion saga into its second year.
