“Oops,” says Southern Miss, Wilkes still alive

The Matador originally posted that the Golden Eagles’ punter Peter Wilkes passed away on Friday based on a press release from the Southern Mississippi Athletic Department. Apparently, the release was premature as the school is now retracting the statement–Wilkes is still alive, but in critical condition. ESPN has the latest: Peter Wilkes, a walk-on punter at Southern Miss, is in critical condition at a Memphis, Tenn., hospital after being shot at his home in Union City, Tenn. Regional Medical...

The run game is getting weaker

The Michigan Wolverines are traveling to Iowa City for a huge game against the Iowa Hawkeyes Saturday night. Unfortunately, the Wolverines will be without their leading rusher as Carlos Brown is still recovering from a concussion suffered during Tuesday’s practice. Brown has not been listed on the team’s injury report, but sources close to the team confirmed his status. With Brown on the bench, Michigan’s Brandon Minor will have to fill his shoes. However, this will be a difficult...

Blame Meyer for Tebow’s injury, no one else

Blame Meyer for Tebow’s injury, no one else

The entire Tim Tebow situation is appalling. The media is blowing this blame game way out of proportion as some are blaming the refs, the questionable hit, the coach, etc. The worst case of finger pointing I’ve seen to date is blaming the BCS for Tebow’s injury. When you look at the entire situation, there is only one person to blame, and that’s Coach Meyer. He is consumed by winning and consumed by winning with the son he never...

AD may not be focused on football

If you are wondering why Marshall’s football team (3-2, defeats at the hands of Va Tech and East Carolina) isn’t doing so well, it could be the fact that the Athletic Director has his mind on other things. Mike Hamrick was hired back in July as Marshall’s AD. Since he was immediately leaving his AD post at UNLV, he advised the president that he needed temporary housing. Due to budget constraints, the president offered Hamrick residence on-campus in the South...

Gator’s O-line just shrunk

A top back-up in Florida’s offensive line rotation went down hard during Tuesday’s practice. It looks like OT Matt Patchan in done for the season after tearing his ACL during non-contract drills on Tuesday.   Patchan is no stranger to injuries as he suffered a leg injury late last season causing him to miss the last three games of the season. Patchan will obviously have surgery to repair the tear, but his football playing days remain questionable. Additionally, this will be...

Clipped Wings?

The Ducks are keeping their beaks shut about the severity of QB Jeremiah Masoli’s knee injury sustained during Oregon’s 52-6 victory over ailing Washington State. Masoli took a tough sack in the first half of the game and a few plays later he left for good. During the second half, he was on the sidelines wearing his Duck warm-up suit. As of yesterday, Masoli finally joined the practice squad, but is playing on a limited basis. There are conflicting...

A King gets crushed

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that Georgia RB Caleb King fractured his jaw and suffered a concussion in last Saturday’s loss to the LSU Tigers. At first, the severity of his injury was either not known or overlooked as King continued to play after taking the injury causing hit. In fact, coach Mark Richt  will play King this Saturday against Tennessee if he gets a medical clearance. Both Richt and Meyer (Meyer wants Tebow to play against LSU) are anxious...

LB Lee ruled out again

It’s been almost 3 weeks since we last saw LB Sean Lee on the field when the Nittany Lions decimated the Temple Owls 31-6. With the win, Lee suffered a left knee injury. At first, it didn’t appear to be too serious, but now, it looks like Joe Paterno is going to keep out his star LB for another game-his third straight. Fortunately, the Nittany Lions are playing powerhouse (hahaha) Eastern Illinois, so pretty much every start won’t really...
