Fallen Trojan

USC incoming freshman Frankie Telfort’s college football career is over before it had a chance to begin. The Trojan was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a heart condition known to be one of the leading causes of death for athletes. This spring, Rivals.com had Telfort listed as the #8 linebacker in the country and he was expected to compete for a position at LB or safety. Telfort will remain on scholarship with USC allowing him the opportunity to stay at the university and take classes. Pete Carroll...

Can he do it?

According to the experts, Ohio State is the team to beat in the Big 10. There is a lot of hype around the Buckeyes and coach Jim Tressel this season.  When you look at this team, all of this season’s fate rests in the hands of sophomore Terrelle Pryor (So. 6’6 235 lbs.). The question remains, can he do it? Pryor had a strong freshman year leading the Big 10 with a pass-efficiency rating of 151.3 in conference play and...

Bruins Land Another 4-Star Commit in Jefferson

USC’s Pete Carroll is accustomed to shaking down most of LA for recruits with little to no challenge from cross-town rival UCLA. If July is any indicator of things to come, Carroll may not be able to take that for granted for much longer. Coach Rick Neuheisel and his Bruins are making their presence in the valley known and have been hitting the recruiting circuit hard this summer. UCLA has already had an extremely active July (3 commits) and recently secured...

Trojans land top QB Recruit

It looks like USC lands top rated recruit Jesse Scroggin  from Lakewood, Calif. Under Armour All-American quarterback Scroggin had his pick of schools from Florida to Tennessee; however, he ended up staying close to home as he announced on ESPN his intentions to play for Pete Carroll  and the USC Trojans. Scroggins’ (6-2/189lbs) decision came down to location, family, and friends. Lakewood is a small Los Angeles community near Long Beach and Anaheim. Also, he has friends that play for USC and...

The Orange back down from Virginia Tech

Syracuse had an abysmal 3-9 record last season. Their highlight was a surprise victory at Notre Dame 24-23. With Doug Marrone stepping in as head coach, he is making an immediate change with the team’s schedule. As of past, the Orange have scheduled some very difficult teams and their record is reflecting the consequence. This season, they open up with the Big 10 against Minnesota, at Penn State, then Northwestern. Probably not the best scheduling decision by athletic director Rob Edson. To...

2010 BCS National Championship Game

The favored to win the 2010 BCS National Championship Game is Florida at 2/1. It’s a solid bet, but other teams to consider are: Texas (8/1): The Longhorns will have a potent offense and will simply win by outscoring their opponents. To be a solid contender, the defense must step up their play and pray opposing offenses have bad days.

The Pac-10

The Pac-10

The Matador dislikes when the Pac 10 is called the Pac 9 plus USC. The Pac 10 is a special conference in that they actually play everyone in their conference (unlike most of the other major conferences--I know what you are thinking Big East). However, the only true contender in the Pac-10 is the perennial powerhouse, USC. Here are the other teams that have an outside shot of winning the Pac 10. Cal would be my favorite if they had...
