USC incoming freshman Frankie Telfort’s college football career is over before it had a chance to begin. The Trojan was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a heart condition known to be one of the leading causes of death for athletes. This spring, Rivals.com had Telfort listed as the #8 linebacker in the country and he was expected to compete for a position at LB or safety.
Telfort will remain on scholarship with USC allowing him the opportunity to stay at the university and take classes. Pete Carroll had the following to say about the situation; “This is obviously very difficult news for Frankie, his family and all of us in the football program, but we’re very thankful doctors discovered the issue before it led to anything worse.” It’s always unfortunate to hear about situations like this. We here at the Matador wish Telfort all the best and hope that he finds success in whatever path he chooses to pursue.
