After a disheartening loss to Washington last weekend 13-16, Pete Carroll has had enough of Aaron Corp and will start QB Matt Barkley this Saturday. As Barkley takes snaps under center against Washington State, the question remains is he being thrown into the game prematurely?
Carroll’s announcement seems a bit umbrageous, stating that Barkley’s bruised right shoulder has healed enough to put him back in the lineup. The phrase “has healed enough” should be a concern for fans and Barkley. I get that Barkley wants to play, but he is overlooking the fact that he could seriously injure his shoulder if he isn’t fully recovered. The young invincible mindset may drive Barkley straight to early retirement. However, it doesn’t seem to be a concern, as starting an injured QB is a clear indication that Carroll wants to win.
Let’s face it, Southern Cal is facing Washington State, the worst football team in the Pac-10 and one of the worst D-1 programs in recent years. The Cougars don’t stand a chance regardless of who is at QB.
Carroll should really consider starting Corp and give Barkley another weeks rest. Remember, the Trojans have to travel to face Cal next Saturday and everyone must be on their A game to take down the 6th ranked team in the nation.
