Gerhart gears for the NFL

Before the season started, no one was sure of Toby Gerhart’s football status and most people outside of Palo Alto never actually knew how good he was. In 2009, he was offered a lucrative baseball contract in June’s MLB draft but he eventually passed on it so he could continue his services as a Cardinal running back. This move turned out to be wise as Gerhart amassed 1,871 rushing yards and 28 rushing touchdowns in 2009–good enough to earn...

A boy named Suh

Ndamukong Suh is the first defensive player to win AP Player of the Year Honors.  The beast of a defensive end from Nebraska edged out Stanford’s Toby Gerhart for the award. Suh has been a dominant force throughout the year and he put on a Heisman worthy performance in the Big XII championship game against Texas. Suh led the ‘Huskers with 12 tackles and 4 1/2 sacks and was invited to New York as a Heisman finalist as a...

Harbaugh Receives Contract Extension

Stanford has reward Jim Harbaugh’s success with a 3 year contract extension. The new deal will keep him in Palo Alto through 2014.  Stanford alum and fans were unsure about his status over the past couple weeks as rumors swirled concerning Harbaugh possibly heading to Notre Dame. However, those fears were quelled last Thursday as Brian Kelly announced he was heading to South Bend. Harbaugh has compiled a 17-19 record at Stanford and has guided them to 8 wins this season. The Cardinal will...

Family Ties

Two Harbaughs will be roaming the sidelines during Stanford’s Sun Bowl appearance against the Oklahoma Sooners. Jack Harbaugh, father of Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh, was hired as an interim running backs coach for the Cardinal for their bowl game. Stanford was left without a running backs coach after Willie Taggart bolted for the head coaching gig at Western Kentucky. Rather than have to rearrange things from within the coaching staff, Jim Harbaugh gave a call to his old...

Weis safe, for another week

For the Irish faithful waiting for the latest on Charlie Weis’ future at ND, you will have to wait at least another week. AD Jack Swarbrick will not decide on Charlie Weis’ fate until after this week’s game against Stanford. In the meantime, Weis stated he would not resign, but said he understands if the school decides to part ways after his disappointing 6-5 record and double OT loss to Connecticut this past Saturday. During Weis’ tenure, he has...

SC’s top WR is out

You wont see Southern California’s WR Damian Williams on the field this weekend against Stanford. His lingering right ankle injury will keep the high-powered receiver on the sidelines. The Trojan’s will certainly miss their leading receiver who has amassed 45 catches  for 688 yards and 5 TDs. Unfortunately for the Trojans, no receiver even comes close to his numbers. Joe McKnight is the closest with 17 catches. Their number 2 receiver Ronald Johnson will have to step-up and take...

Lock of the week

Every time The Matador takes a step forward, it is inevitable he ultimately takes a step back. So to get back on the right foot (the lock of the week is 4-4 for the season) take Oregon over Stanford. The line should be -5.5.  Oregon is the real deal. After a terrible start against Boise State and a close game against Purdue, the Ducks have been beating down on their opponents while their defense stands strong. In the last five games,...
