Before the season started, no one was sure of Toby Gerhart’s football status and most people outside of Palo Alto never actually knew how good he was. In 2009, he was offered a lucrative baseball contract in June’s MLB draft but he eventually passed on it so he could continue his services as a Cardinal running back.
This move turned out to be wise as Gerhart amassed 1,871 rushing yards and 28 rushing touchdowns in 2009–good enough to earn him the Doak Walker award and runner-up for the Heisman trophy. His top plays also got NFL scouts abuzz. So much so, Gerhart is foregoing his remaining year of eligibility to take his shot in the NFL.
“After careful thought and deliberation, I have decided to withdraw from Stanford University for the winter quarter in order to fully devote my energies towards the pursuit of my dream of playing in the NFL.”
Gerhart made a great run while at Standford. Here at The Matador, we hope he has similar success in the NFL.
