Iowa’s Norm Parker puts his best foot forward

Sadly, Iowa defensive coordinator Norm Parker had his right foot amputated last month due to complications from his battle with diabetes. Though he has been hospitalized since September, head coach Kirk Ferentz is anxiously waiting for Parker’s return to spur an Iowa defensive that ranks 4th in the nation allowing only 242.2 yards per game. Ferentz is more than confident that Parker will be back coaching prior to the end of the season and Parker wants nothing more but to...

Injury to Insult

Iowa suffered two losses this past Saturday in Tucson, Arizona. As if  losing 31-24 to the Arizona Wildcats wasn’t enough, the Hawkeyes also lost starting RB Jewel Hampton for the rest of the season, after he tore his ACL in the second half. With only one other bonafied RB on the roster in Adam Robinson, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz is scrambling to find replacements: “We’ve got Adam, and anyone else that wants to volunteer.” Hampton’s career at Iowa has...

Is Kirk Ferentz the most overrated coach in college football? Pt. 2

The first part of this Iowa news series received such a warm reception by Hawkeye Nation, hopefully part two promises more of the same. Apparently, Hawkeye football in Iowa is more popular than corn subsidies. Iowans from Sioux City to Waterloo either left comments or shot-off emails, sticking up for their head coach, with some using a few choice words to do so.  Nonetheless, I would not expect any different from any true college football fan in coming to the aid and defense of their...

Is Kirk Ferentz the most overrated coach in college football?

When the topic of overrated college football coaches comes up, names such as Jim Tressel, Mark Richt, Rich Rodriguez and Les Miles are often tossed around. Out of these four coaches, two, (Tressel and Miles) have a BCS National Championship trophy to show. However, Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz is rarely mentioned in such conversations. Why is this? I get that he and Iowa have always been media darlings, and I understand his Hawkeyes have been the proverbial fly in the ointment for Penn State...

Binns Drinker

A third Hawkeye football player was arrested for an alcohol related incident since the start of summer. Iowa’s Broderick Binns was arrested early Friday morning and charged with drinking and driving after being pulled over at the intersection of Benton Street and Greenwood Drive in Iowa City. Binns was pulled over for traffic violations by University Heights police after he drove straight through a left turn lane. The watery eyed defensive end reeked of alcohol and barely held his...

This Jewel lost his shine

Two Iowa football players were arrested early Saturday morning after a fight at Iowa City’s Vito bar. Running back Jewel Hampton, 20, was arrested for public intoxication and underage presence at a liquor establishment. Witnesses stated that Hampton was causing problems with Vito patrons that soon turned physical. As the altercations moved outside, police arrived at the scene to break up the melee.  Hampton was immediately arrested for his involvement. Upon his arrest, he blew a .091. Fellow teammate...

Regardless of your position on Notre Dame, this storied program still has a strong bite and will always have a national presence even coming off of sub-par performances this past decade. As Charlie Weis was dismissed from Notre Dame, Universities and ADs throughout the nation were scrambling to prevent their big time coaches from being lured by the aura of Notre Dame.  Most recently, #4 TCU just locked in coach Gary Patterson to a new contract through the 2016...

Zook signs on the dotted line

Another Big 10 coach signs an extention. As reported early in the week, the extension was anticiated and today, it finally came to fruition. Illinios and Zook agree to a one year extension coming off of his subpar 5-7 mark last season. The contract extension runs through the 2013 season. However, the agreement does not include a raise in Zook’s annual $1.505 million salary. Zook a was quoted as saying, “I am very excited that the Board and Chancellor...
