A third Hawkeye football player was arrested for an alcohol related incident since the start of summer. Iowa’s Broderick Binns was arrested early Friday morning and charged with drinking and driving after being pulled over at the intersection of Benton Street and Greenwood Drive in Iowa City. Binns was pulled over for traffic violations by University Heights police after he drove straight through a left turn lane. The watery eyed defensive end reeked of alcohol and barely held his balance, let alone his speech when confronted by the officer. The 20 year old, who was wearing a wristband from a local bar indicating he was of age, denied he was drinking, but later retracted his statement and said he had several drinks after he failed the breath test with a BAC of .097.
Kirk Ferentz was disappointed of hearing this news and acknowledged that Binns will receive some sort of suspension, community service, and counseling for his poor judgment. Binns, who started all 13 games last season, is a standout end who played a critical role in Iowa’s 2009 campaign and should continue to be a wrecking machine in 2010 despite his run-in with the law.
