Jewel Hampton (#27) was all smiles after his stellar freshman season

Two Iowa football players were arrested early Saturday morning after a fight at Iowa City’s Vito bar. Running back Jewel Hampton, 20, was arrested for public intoxication and underage presence at a liquor establishment. Witnesses stated that Hampton was causing problems with Vito patrons that soon turned physical.

As the altercations moved outside, police arrived at the scene to break up the melee.  Hampton was immediately arrested for his involvement. Upon his arrest, he blew a .091. Fellow teammate Jordan Bernstine, 21, was also arrested for interfering with an arresting officer. Bernstine blew a .127 and was charged with public intoxication.

Kirk Ferentz was immediately notified of the two arrests and he said that the matter would be handled internally.

Hampton was projected to replace Shonn Greene last season, but was sideline in 2009 after reinjuring his knee during preseason camp. Both Hampton and Bernstine are expected to compete for starting roster spots in 2010. The arrests should only be a minor set-back for the two players as their services will certainly be needed in 2010 if Iowa has any hopes of winning the Big 10 title.
