10 Colleges With the Most Powerful Coaches

Ideally, colleges should be well-known, desirable, and popular because of the high quality of educational resources they offer students and other members of the community. Yet, here in the U.S. that’s not always the case. Many schools’ academic programs are eclipsed by the overwhelming popularity of their sports teams, and for better or worse that has made the coaches and head administrators of these teams incredibly powerful figures that dominate what has now become a billion-dollar industry for colleges...

The party is officially over in Durham

Duke university is officially canceling its pregame festivities commonly referred to as Tailgate. In light of last Saturday’s drunken stupor, the university is closing the gates on a pre-football game tradition. Vice President of Student Affairs, Larry Moneta, deemed “Tailgate has become and embarrassment.” Moneta’s strong words were an apparent reaction to a 15 year-old guest being found passed out in a porta-potty after the crowd dispersed and headed to the stadium.  Being a minor, information of the incident is...

It’s a completely different animal

The buzz is in the air and time seems to be moving at a snails pace as we wait for tonight’s championship basketball game featuring heavily favored Duke v. Butler. In the meantime, Duke’s longtime coach (and rumored to be courted by the Nets) Mike Krzyzewski had a few things to say about the Bowl Championship Series in comparison to March Madness. Coach K believes that a team like Butler would never make it to the championship game in...

Sunday Morning Perk

March Madness has taken over the college world by storm, but here at The Matador we want to make sure the fans are kept up-to-date with happenings around the gridiron. Not only has Duke dominated on the hardwood, but the Blue Devils must be excited about their heralded freshman recruit, QB Brandon Connette, who is the real deal. He lead three impressive scoring drives in the Blue’s 24-3 win over the White team during Saturday’s spring game. Alabama’s “system...

Paulus is confident he could take down Clausen, et al.

Greg Paulus was most recently featured on the Dan Patrick Show. For about 10 minutes, Patrick, in true form, blitzed Paulus about both basketball and football. He was pushing Paulus to see if he would say anything negative about Coach K and Duke. He even put Paulus on the spot by asking who has a better basketball team, Syracuse or Duke. But the real interest was his response about whether or not he is a better QB than Tim Tebow, Sam...

You Little Devil!

Duke’s football team had quite the week filled with drama. First, speculation abounded over head coach David Cutcliffe’s potential departure to Tennessee. Now, three Blue Devil’s have been dismissed from the team for violation of team conduct. Early Sunday, gun shots were fired outside of a campus dorm by three Duke football players. In fear and panic, Police were called to the scene and were they recovered the discharged handgun. As a result, John Drew, Kyle Griswold, and Brandon Putnam were all...

RB Draughn out for the season

North Carolina’s depth chart at RB shrunk this past Saturday. During the Tar Heels’ 19-6 victory over Duke, starting RB Shaun Draughn fractured his left shoulder blade on the first play of scrimmage and will be out for the remainder of the 2009 season. The junior was 7th in rushing in the ACC averaging 63.0 yard/game. He was the team leader in rushing amassing 567 yards on 124 carries in nine games. In his place, RB Ryan Houston will...

Florida State will cover

It’s week 8 and The Matador is 4-3 on his weekly picks. Last weekend, Penn State was a huge victor over the slumping Wolverines. This week’s lock should provide the same financial reward. Florida State (-7.0) will cover easily over NC State. The Wolfpack (3-4) have lost their last two games to Duke and BC by an average of 26.5 points. Meanwhile, the ‘Noles have the #1 offense in the ACC and Ponder is putting up Heisman type numbers...
