The buzz is in the air and time seems to be moving at a snails pace as we wait for tonight’s championship basketball game featuring heavily favored Duke v. Butler. In the meantime, Duke’s longtime coach (and rumored to be courted by the Nets) Mike Krzyzewski had a few things to say about the Bowl Championship Series in comparison to March Madness. Coach K believes that a team like Butler would never make it to the championship game in the current BCS format. Therefore, the BCS will never capture the hearts of America as March Madness does every year.
“It’s [March Madness v. BCS Bowl Series] a completely different animal,” remarks Coach K. The BCS system does not allow for smaller schools to get the spotlight. Even in the rare event where a team has a legitimate shot, the BCS will apply the handcuffs. This was evident last year when Boise State and TCU both had terrific seasons and both deservedly earned BCS births. The BCS committee matched the two schools together rather than letting them play against any of the six BCS conference champs.
The smaller schools don’t have a realistic shot at the BCS national championship game. Conversely, in the NCAA basketball tournament, the road may be extremely difficult, but if a team wins out, it will receive a ticket to the championship game as Butler has shown this year.
The Matador is a big proponent of a playoff system and adopting some sort of 8 team bracket could really put to rest the doubters and we would have the closest thing to a national championship game as possible. Hopefully after the health care issue dissipates, the anti-trust gurus can get back on Congress to force some sort of playoff system.
Until then, enjoy what will truly be an exciting championship game.
