USC stripped of the Grantland Rice Trophy

The hits just keep on coming for the Trojans. This time the Trojans have the honor of achieving something no other collegiate football championship team has ever accomplished–the revocation of a national championship award. The 2004 Grantland Rice Trophy, awarded by the Football Writers Association of America to the nation’s top college football team, has been stripped from the program. The committee voted and agreed that USC was not deserving of the award due to its most recent NCAA rules violation. Additionally, the Trojans will not be considered for the 2010 award as part of the school’s sanction.

The FWAA did announce that no other school would receive the award in lieu of USC primarily because the committee couldn’t agree on one program. The three frontrunners were presumably then #3 Oklahoma, #2 Auburn and #4 Utah.

The BCS is also considering to vacate USC’s title, but the committee will stay the vote until the Trojans appeal process is exhausted.
