Mountain West Denied Automatic BCS Bid

For the Mountain West faithful, the dream of attaining automatic qualifying (AQ) status for the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) has ended.  On Tuesday, the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee denied the conference’s request for a waiver that would have given the Mountain West an automatic bid for post-season play in the lucrative BCS for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Though it was considered a long shot for the conference to attain AQ status, it was a disappointment considering the recent...

ACC disappoints as bowl season ends with 2-6 record

Following West Virginia’s 70-33 rout of 14th ranked Clemson in last night’s Discover Orange Bowl, the ACC is a paltry 2-6 in bowl season play. This record marks the lowest winning percentage for AQ conferences for the 2011 season. It could have been worse, but thanks to Florida State’s heroic efforts in the Champs Sports Bowl edging Notre Dame 18-14 and NC State’s TD victory over Louisville 31-24, the ACC secured two much needed wins. To be fair, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech...

Another ACC team struggles to sell BCS bowl tickets

First it was reported Virginia Tech is falling short of selling its allotment for the 2012 Allstate Sugar Bowl costing the school a significant amount of money, now it looks like Clemson is in the same financial predicament. The Tigers are projected to take a $185,000 hit just to play in the 2011 Orange Bowl. This is not good news for Clemson considering it is the program’s first major bowl appearance in 30 years. Clemson received $1.75 million in...

Coe College running back gets chased down by cop, tased and arrested

It is no wonder freshman running back Colin Ferring has yet to see playing time on the field or was not recruited by a BCS school—he has no speed or agility. This past weekend the freshman Waukon native decided to get drunk and make bad decisions. After a hard night of drinking, Ferring scampered onto campus and stole a Coe College utility vehicle. As Ferring and five of his cohorts were joyriding in the stolen John Deere Gator, police officers initiated a routine...

The Heisman Trophy is one of the most coveted trophies in all of sports. However, winning this award, for some, is a jinx synonymous to the Madden Curse. Return to Sender: USC stripped of ’04 Grantland Rice Trophy

The hits just keep on coming for the Trojans. The 2004 Grantland Rice Trophy, awarded by the Football Writers Association of America to the nation’s top college football team, has been stripped from the program. The committee voted and agreed that USC was not deserving of the award due to its most recent NCAA rules...

It pays to Discover

In a world of financial disarray and questionable banking practices, Discover Financial Services has agreed to be the title sponsor of the former FedEx Orange Bowl in hopes of raising brand recognition. The named sponsorship will last through 2014 and will include the 2013 BCS National Championship Game. As it stands, Discover’s market share in the credit industry is stuck in single digits, but with millions of college football fans hooked on the bowl season, Discover hopes to make a windfall. The new...
