NCAA Football Quarterbacks to Watch This Year

What a year this promises to be in the NCAA it’s left me pondering the NCAA rankings and my thoughts on wagering. When composing this piece about the best quarterbacks who will grace our college football fields this year, I continually changed my mind. I had a look at the wageronsports.com website to see what the site recommend, but I was still unsure as to who would come out top dog. I finally settled on three quarterbacks who I...

Trojans Include Twitter Handle On Player Bio’s

In another step to lure top talent and to let blue-chippers know that USC is the place to showcase your football talent, head coach Lane Kiffin and the Trojans are now including twitter handles on player bio’s. This risky move is an apparent attempt to keep prospective players virtually connected to current players without breaking any recruiting violations.    Twitter is certainly a wonderful tool that allows for instant communication without filter to a worldwide audience.  With that said, college football coaches such...

NCAA president mulling two-round playoff

NCAA president Mark Emmert spoke at a Tallahassee civic organization luncheon yesterday reiterating his support for a two-round, four-team BCS championship playoff system. After Alabama blanketed LSU 21-0 in the BCS championship game, it only added more fuel to the playoff fire. Under Emmert’s final four scenario, LSU would have matched up against Stanford and Alabama would have played Oklahoma State. The winners would have advanced to the BCS championship game. Football players get a bump in pay

The NCAA approved an initiative that allows athletic conferences the option of giving full scholarship athletes a $2,000 annual stipend to help defray the high cost of college. The $2,000 stipend would be in addition to the athlete’s full scholarship (which is currently limited to room, board,...

Congressman John Conyers urges House probe on antitrust issues in college sports

The landscape of college football and the respective conference realignment carousel is not only causing a stir amongst college football fans, but it’s causing concern amongst key members on Capitol Hill. Ranking Democrat Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) voiced his concern earlier this week by sending a six page letter to Texas Republican Lamar Smith, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, urging the Judiciary Committee to hold hearings regarding the state and role of money in college sports. In his...

It’s never too late to play football

If you want to talk about someone refusing not to give up on a dream of playing college football, look no further than Faulkner University’s Alan Moore.  Moore is a 61-year old Vietnam veteran who is set to make the roster for the Eagles’ newest yet oldest kicker in team history. Moore is no stranger to kicking as his college football quest began in 1968 when he kicked for Jones Community College (Mississippi).  Unfortunately, his playing days were cut...

Stick a feather in it, Fighting Sioux nickname retired

The three prong dispute between North Dakota, the state legislature, and the NCAA regarding the North Dakota nickname Fighting Sioux comes to an end after much legal and political debate.  North Dakota’s Board of Higher Education will retire the school nickname and logo come 2012. With the general population becoming overly sensitive with just about everything and the threat that lawmakers would repeal a law that required the school to not change its nickname and logo, there was growing...
