Armed Forces Bowl adds Army to list of eligible teams

The Armed Forces Bowl has reached an agreement with Army that will pave the way for the Black Knights to play in the bowl game next season. Currently the Armed Forces Bowl has a contractual obligation to pick between Conference USA and Mountain West Conference teams that are bowl eligible at the end of the season. With this new agreement, Army, an independent team, will join the Air Force Academy and the Naval Academy as potential teams for the bowl outside of the CUSA and MWC teams.

The first Armed Forces Bowl was played in 2003 and has been surprisingly exciting over the years. Air Force won last year’s game against the favored Houston Cougars by steamrolling them 47-20.  Seeing that Army hasn’t played in a bowl game since their 3 point loss to Auburn in the 1996 Independence Bowl, it’s highly unlikely that they’ll be making the trip to Dallas Fort-Worth for the holidays in 2011.
