The Garret Gilbert era is underway in Austin

The Garrett Gilbert era is officially underway in Austin, Texas. The rising sophomore was thrown into the fire as a true freshman during the 2010 BCS National Championship game against Alabama after Texas starting QB Colt McCoy left the game in the first quarter with an injury. Even though Gilbert only went 15-40 for 146 yards with 2 TDs and 4 INTs, his Longhorns were still in the game heading into the last 10 minutes of the 4th quarter.

Gilbert impressed fans and coaches during Texas’ spring scrimmage this past Sunday. Gilbert connected on 10 out of 13 passes for 165 yards and three touchdowns. All three touchdowns were thrown to different receivers. Gilbert has large shoes to fill replacing the NCAA all time winningest quarterback Colt McCoy who won a record 45 games. While McCoy has left an indelible mark at Texas, Gilbert should serve as a fine replacement. Texas opens their 2010 campaign on September 4th against Rice.
