Fans in Corvallis got some bad news from the NCAA. Unfortunately, the NCAA denied Oregon State QB Lyle Moevao’s appeal for an additional year of eligibility. Moevao injured his right shoulder during the 2008 season that ultimately led to shoulder surgery. After recovering from the surgery, Moevao worked his way back onto the field for the 2009 season to only play one down. In October of 2009, he injured his right ankle which ended his season. Due to his extensive injuries, Moevao petitioned the NCAA for one more year of playing time.
For reasons that are inconsistent, the NCAA denied Moevao’s appeal “due to him not demonstrating the loss of two seasons beyond his control.” It’s tough to predict what the NCAA will do when it comes to eligibility requirements, but maybe if Moevao played for a big market school like Texas and was named Jordan Shipley, he would have gotten that extension.
We really don’t know how good Moevao could have been, but as a starter, Moevao had solid numbers with an 11-4 record and passing for 3,410 yards with 21 TDs. With the departure of Sean Canfield, Oregon State would have liked an experienced QB under center come spring. Now it looks like an uncertain battle is in the mix between sophomore Ryan Katz (the team’s frontrunner), junior Peter Lalich, redshirt freshman Jack Lomax and Cody Vaz.
It’s just unfortunate that the NCAA took away playing time from this kid who had legitimate injuries and was only asking for one more year.
