True frosh QB Wynn named starter for Utes

The Utah Utes are handing over the offensive reigns to a true freshman. Coach Kyle Whittingham announced today that QB Jordan Wynn will be the starter for the Utes. Most eyes were on junior Corbin Louks to start with Terrance Cain (a JUCO transfer) as a back-up. As of now, Louks went from the slated started to #3 behind both Wynn and Cain. Coach Whittingham did state that the QB depth chart could change at anytime. Regardless, whoever ends up under center...

OSU’s Small Back on Team

Ohio State’s WR and PR Ray Small has been cleared to rejoin the team by coach Jim Tressel. However, Small is still in the doghouse and has a short leash around his neck primarily for his academic issues. Tressel has not given him all the privileges yet of being on the team and Small will not be partaking in the official team photo later this week. Hopefully, Small gets his act together so he can suit up and play. He...

DT Armstong Departs Maryland

The Maryland Terrapins and DT Dion Armstrong are parting ways. Armstrong, who has been having academic issues all through the spring and the summer, informed coach Ralph Friedgen of his intent to transfer. Friedgen was accepting of Armstrong’s issues and understands it’s time to move on.  From a football perspective, this hurts the Terrapins’ D-line. Now, Friedgen will have to shuffle some players as Armstrong was to start and DT Ian Davidson was going to back him up. Terps fans may...

Thou Shall Not Cut Class

JoePa is throwing down the gauntlet, sort of. He is fed up with CB A.J. Wallace‘s lack of effort when it comes to going to class.  To show he is serious, he is threatening to suspend Wallace for two games if his attendance does not improve. Now for most programs, this would be huge, but fortunately for Penn State, the suspension, if applied, would be against Akron and Syracuse, neither of which have an aerial assault worthy of concern....

Crimson Tide RB Out for Season

The Crimson Tide’s depth chart at RB took a hit this week. Sophomore RB Jeramie Griffin tore his ACL during a Tuesday night practice on turf. The team was practicing in its brand new in-door facility with new turf. The injury occured during non-contact drills. He is expected to have season ending surgery in the near future and he already red-shirted in 2007, so there are questions on how the Tide is going to play this. Last season, Griffin saw limited action...

Robinson continues to nurse injury

It’s been four days and there is still no sign of Oklahoma State’s QB Zac Robinson. Again, he was held out of practice today due to a leg injury, a pulled muscle. Coach Mike Gundy does not anticipate his return until after Saturday’s scrimmage game. Gundy is concerned about the length of Robinson’s recovery, but he is also optimistic in that QB back-ups Brandon Weeden and Alex Cate are getting more reps than usual. Oklahoma State kicks off the season...

O, Where art thou?

During the spring game, there was concern about the lack of depth and inexperience of the offensive line and now there is even more reason to be concerned. As the North Carolina Tar Heels get closer to kick-off, coach Butch Davis is concerned about the O-line and protecting QB T.J. Yates. Recently, back-up guard Kevin Bryant (So. 6’7, 350 lbs.) was dismissed from the team. Now, back-up left tackle Carl Gaskins (So. 6’5, 295 lbs.) tore his ACL during...

Jordan breaks ankle

The Hawkeye’s secondary took a hit during preseason camp this past Wednesday. CB Jordan Bernstine (Jr. 5’11, 205 lbs.) broke his ankle during special teams drills. He will have surgery to repair the break and will likely miss the 2009 season. He is eligible to red-shirt, but this serves as a huge blow to a player who was so focused and determined to start. He was projected to be a back-up behind CB Shaun Prater, but during the off season,...
