In the wake of LSU’s soccer sensation Mo Isom failing to make the cut to kick for the Tigers, Virginia Tech’s Lauren Luttrell also fell short in her quest. Yesterday, the Hokies held kicking tryouts in which Luttrell was one of 10 kickers trying to make the team. The former high school star athlete, made seven of eight field goal attempts and advanced to the second round beating out three male counterparts. Unfortunately, at the end of the day, she was not selected as one of the three walk-on finalists.
Coach Frank Beamer cited Luttrell was spot on with accuracy and fundamentals, but it was her leg strength that held her back, “look girl, I’m proud of you. You have the fundamentals, you have the technique; you just need the power and it’s something guys are going to
have on you all the time. But don’t be hard on yourself.”
This was Luttrell’s second attempt at making the team. Back in August of 2011, she impressed coaches with her kicking abilities which led to an invitation to tryout yesterday. Though she did not make the final round, Luttrell is not giving up on her dreams of kicking for the Hokies. She is currently working on ways to train with the coaches to tryout again next season.
Here at TheMatadorSports, we wish Luttrell the best of luck as she is an inspiration to us all.
