Under Saban, The Tide Has Turned

On January 3, 2007, Nick Saban agreed to become Alabama’s 27th head coach. Both the Tide and Saban were the butt of many jokes across the nation. College football fans from Eugene, OR, to West Palm Beach, FL, were placing bets on how long it would be before Saban left the Crimson Tide for greener pastures elsewhere. Thirty-eight wins later, it looks as if Saban and Alabama are having the last laugh. For a conference that prides itself on being the...

Gamecocks Probed

When Steve Spurrier isn’t taking jabs at Tennessee, he is busy figuring out how to deal with the NCAA breathing down his team’s back. Last night, it looks like the remaining South Carolina football players who were residing in meager accommodations were told to settle their bills, if any, and move out of the Whitney Hotel. Since the coach’s stern directive, several players were seen packing their bags and moving out of the posh Columbia roadhouse. The Whitney is known...

Tim Tebow’s Heisman pose will forever remain

The home of the Florida Gators, Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, is getting a new face, actually three new faces. The University Athletic Association approved to honor the Gators’ 3 Heisman Trophy winners by memorializing their accomplishments in individual life-like statues. Tim Tebow (2007), Danny Wuerffel (1996), and Steve Spurrier (1966) will be forever bronzed on the west side of the Swamp. In the words of AD Jeremy Foley, “Any time you have that type of tradition, we want to make...

Hillary bolts as it heats up in Columbia, SC

Photo Source: Life.com  Things are heating up in South Carolina and I’m not just talking about the weather. As the university is dealing with a small bout of racism, Coach Spurrier is dealing with QB attrition.  As it stands, Spurrier already lost QB Reid McCollum earlier this year and now it looks like QB Aramis Hillary is packing his bags too. The reason the name sounds familiar is Hillary was recently suspended for an arrest earlier this month...

Palmetto State Showdown

Things are heating up in the great state of South Carolina. Not surprisingly, the debate has to do with race. Three years ago, the University of South Carolina made the news when current head coach Steve Spurrier urged state lawmakers to pass legislation that would remove the confederate flag from the statehouse in Columbia, SC. Spurrier claimed that it had a negative impact on the recruitment of black athletes. Fast forward to 2010. Black legislators are advising black high...

SC’s Saunders Out

South Carolinais heading into Saturday’s match-up against Kentucky without star TE Weslye Saunders. Saunders injured his ankle in last week’s beat-down of South Carolina State. The 6’5 TE aggravated the ankle which has given him troubles before in the past. In his absence, SC will be forced to start Justice Cunningham. Cunningham has seen action in all of South Carolina’s games this season so they will have some experience to turn to while Saunders recovers.

DE Geathers to Serve One Game Suspension

Early, The Matador reported that DE Clifton Geathers was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and public drunkeness. At the time, Steve Spurrier suspended Geathers indefinitely; however, Spurrier eased up on his harsh reaction and will only suspend the star DE for one game. Since Geathers is still recovering from a facial broken bone from the incident with the bouncer, he is not medically cleared to play. Once he is cleared, he will serve his one game suspension.

Things were hotter than usual in Columbia, SC this weekend which resulted in the suspension of SC defensive end Clifton Geathers.
