Will there be an exodus from Troy?

In the aftermath of the fall of Troy, the NCAA cleared the way for USC juniors and seniors to-be to transfer from the team without being forced to sit out a season. Schools are now free to initiate contact with such players who fall into this category. The NCAA rule allows for a waiver to be granted if the school has a postseason ban in place during the transfer. Unfortunately, this rule does not apply to USC freshman who have recently...

The gauntlet falls on Troy

Though USC has not confirmed the reports, the NCAA is heavily sanctioning the Trojans for their NCAA violations. The sanctions include a two year bowl ban and a loss of more than 20 football scholarships. Additionally, the school may have to forfeit prior victories to include their National Championship season. USC did not confirm or deny the reports but the school issued a statement saying, “we are looking at things right now. That’s about all I can say.” It...

Judgment day is coming

The most preeminent athletic program in the PAC-10 awaits its fate for alleged impropriety. The NCAA committee on infractions will release its findings of its investigation of both the University of Southern California’s basketball team and football team regarding NCAA violations. USC already addressed the issue surrounding basketball phenom O.J. Mayo and opted with self imposed sanctions. The school put a ban on postseason play, reduced scholarships, and vacated all wins from 2007-08. The football team is facing allegations...

Mountain West flirts with Boise State

Lost in all of the recent Big Ten/SEC/Pac-10/Big XII conference expansion noise, is Boise State and the Mountain West Conference’s (MWC) courting of the Broncos. Boise State could be the first school to bolt for greener pastures if they accept the rumored MWC invite next month during conference president meetings. While everyone is focusing on the four power college football conferences and their potential expansions, a situation is brewing out west that could be the first shot fired in...

Even if you lose, you still win

To be bowl eligible, you have to win at least 6 games during the regular season. In prior seasons, even if you won the requisite amount, a team may still not receive a bowl bid. As the NCAA prepares for the 2010 kick-off, this rule of thumb can be tossed out the window. With the NCAA approving two additional bowl games, there are now 35 bowl games lined up for the upcoming season. This means 70 teams will play...

The NCAA has a unique relationship with USC

The NCAA has some bizarre love affair with USC and appears to go out of its way to protect the program. Recently, the Pac 10 conference reported that an unnamed coach (Pete Carroll) was found in violation for having a paid consultant on staff during practices and games. The violation wasn’t necessarily the hiring of a consultant; rather, it had more to do with the number of coaches the team employed. Though the Pac 10 did not release the...

Bush reaches settlement

We may never actually know what happened between Lloyd Lake and Reggie Bush. The former USC standout has settled his civil case and will no longer be deposed regarding cash and other benefits provided to him and his family while at USC. Lake was the financier of marketing agency New Era Sports and Entertainment. New Era is now defunct and Lloyd was seeking money allegedly paid to benefit Bush and his family during Bush’s Trojan days. Though there is...
