In the aftermath of the fall of Troy, the NCAA cleared the way for USC juniors and seniors to-be to transfer from the team without being forced to sit out a season. Schools are now free to initiate contact with such players who fall into this category. The NCAA rule allows for a waiver to be granted if the school has a postseason ban in place during the transfer. Unfortunately, this rule does not apply to USC freshman who have recently signed letters of intent.
As it stands, USC has a two year bowl ban, four year’s probation, loss of 30 scholarships (10 per year for 3 years), and must vacate wins during the 2004 National Championship season for failing to have institutional control. The BCS will more than likely strip USC of their title too. Some may see the sanctions as harsh, but they actually appear to be fair. It’s also an indication that the NCAA is doing what it can to protect the upperclassmen who are directly impacted by this decision.
The question remains, can Lane Kiffin keep a hold of his players?
