If you have a phone, you have a lawyer

As Penn State gears up for its New Year’s Day bowl, the team got a little scare on Thursday. It’s been reported that QB Daryll Clark was in fender bender in State College, PA. Clark, in his 1998 Chevy Lumina, was driving on Westerly Parkway at 8:30 pm when he was broadsided by an SUV. After the accident, Clark appeared to be injury free. He was “fine” but upset that his Chevy was “all messed up.” At first there...

Four assistants take fall for Zook

Ron Zook is coming off of one of his worst coaching seasons in his illustrious career. Prior to the season, there was a lot of promise with Juice Williams and Arrelious Benn leading the offensive threat. Well things just didn’t work out like they were supposed to as Illinois finished 3-9 and 50th in total offense and 82nd in points per game. So rather than taking the blame for his team’s woes, Zook is cleaning house and firing staff. OC...

Merry Christmas, have a pink slip

The crystal ball is telling The Matador that unemployment will be on the rise in the state of Florida come 2010. It looks like when Jimbo Fisher takes the helm, he will be clearing house. Already on the list for pink slips is Dexter Carter, running backs coach, Chuck Amato, assistant coach, Todd Stroud strength coach, and Jody Allen DE coach. At least those four and maybe more will ring in 2010 with all the good folks standing in the unemployment line....

The NCAA is in the Christmas Spirit

The NCAA is very strict when it comes to showering players with money and gifts; however, come bowl season do they ever make it rain. This year, the NCAA is allowing each player under “special benefits” to receive up to $500 worth of gifts from their bowl host and up to an additional $350 from the player’s school if the school so elects (this does not include the player’s cash per diem). The 2009 bowl gift list is nothing...

Marine dies in argument over Big 12 game

At the end of the day, college football is just a game. Now I am as passionate a fan as the next guy, but sometimes fans take their passion a bit too far for no other reason but to brag presumably for a team they didn’t even play for. The most recent nonsensical act of violence occurred after the Texas-Nebraska game at a home in North Carolina. During the epic Big 12 championship game, two friends got into a...

A slap in the face for TCU and Boise State

As the bowl line-up was recently announced, two teams received a back handed compliment. #6 Boise State and #3 TCU both landed BCS bids, but much to their dismay, they did not get the marquee match-up as they hoped. Unfortunately, they will be playing each other in this year’s Fiesta Bowl. When TCU and Boise State both received bids, the school’s erupted with enthusiasm. But seconds later, the crowds suddenly became disenchanted when it was announced that the Horned...

London to UVA

London to UVA

UVA wasted no time in traveling to Westhampton Way to knock on the door of Richmond’s Mike London regarding the Cavaliers’ head coaching vacancy. UVA pressed hard and came strong by immediately offering the coaching job to London to replace the departed Al  Groh–and word on the street is, he is going to take it. London was UVA’s first choice and for all intensive purposes, their only choice. This is the most logical move as he was an assistant to Groh’s staff for six...

ND snubs bowl, season over

After a rocky 6-6 season and the departure of head coach Charlie Weis, Notre Dame announced it will not go bowling this season. The Irish’s AD Jack Swarbrick stated that considering “unique circumstances” it is not in the best interest for ND to play this post-season. Thus, the season is officially over. But as history shows, ND is no stranger to refusing bowl invitations. The team used to live by the creed of playing only a higher-ranked team or one...
