Bret Bielema: worth the price of admission?

It’s time for Wisconsin’s Bret Bielema to make a move or to move on. Ever since the Iowa grad took over for Barry Alvarez, his Badger teams have been derailed from any major bowl or conference title. In his first season, he came out strong with a 12-1 record and won the Capital One Bowl 17-14 over Arkansas (’06). Wisconsin figured they landed a gem for a head coach, but his highly regarded teams quickly faltered (9 wins in ’07...

Is Kirk Ferentz the most overrated coach in college football?

When the topic of overrated college football coaches comes up, names such as Jim Tressel, Mark Richt, Rich Rodriguez and Les Miles are often tossed around. Out of these four coaches, two, (Tressel and Miles) have a BCS National Championship trophy to show. However, Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz is rarely mentioned in such conversations. Why is this? I get that he and Iowa have always been media darlings, and I understand his Hawkeyes have been the proverbial fly in the ointment for Penn State...

This Jewel lost his shine

Two Iowa football players were arrested early Saturday morning after a fight at Iowa City’s Vito bar. The Price is wrong for Penn State

The attrition rate at Penn State seems to be growing for the Nittany Lion’s WR corp. First, Levi Norwood departed the team earlier this year to be closer to his family at Baylor. Now, it looks like A.J. Price, a Northern Virginia native, was just granted his release from the team with the intentions of transferring to the University of Virginia under head coach Mike London. Though the Nittany Lions will not feel the effect of these two departures...

FedEx Squeezed from BCS

FedEx announced today that it was ending it’s twenty-one year long sponsorship of the Orange Bowl. FedEx executives decided that it was not in the company’s best financial interest to continue sponsoring the bowl game. The change of heart from FedEx stems from the result of ESPN taking over broadcasting rights of BCS games from FOX Broadcasting Company beginning in 2011. ESPN purchased the BCS rights to sell sponsorship and advertising for the football games at the price of...

JoePa continues to churn NFL caliber linebackers

Schools earn nicknames for a reason and anyone who follows college football knows where the greatest linebackers come to play ball. Penn State continued to showcase its “Linebacker U” status by having all three starting linebackers drafted in the 2010 NFL Draft. This marks 6 linebackers drafted in the past four drafts for JoePa. The first LB to go was Sean Lee in the 2nd round to the Dallas Cowboys (55th pick). LB Navorro Bowman was drafted in the...

Will it be Iowa or Penn State?

The Big 10 regular season has just about come to an end but it certainly left an interesting dilemma for the BCS bowl committee. Basically, the Big 10 has three eligible teams for two BCS bids. Ohio State clinched the first bid with its automatic BCS Rose Bowl birth by winning the Big 10. This leaves Iowa and Penn State as the two remaining teams for one precious at-large birth. Iowa is currently ranked 11th and Penn State is ranked 13th after both completing their regular season...
