Hawkeyes and Cornhuskers introduce “The Heroes Game”

The B1G continues to disappoint when it comes to marketing and gimmicks.  This time the thanks goes to Iowa and Nebraska, who decided to dub their newly created rivalry game “The Heroes Game.” The notion behind this game is to honor one hero from each respective state prior to the annual match-up.  Friends, neighbors, co-workers, or pretty much anyone who has a voice will nominate each hero from each state.  Aside from pre-game and on-filed recognition, the school will...

Air Force must Aim Higher

For those 70,000 fans that witnessed the spectacular aerial T-38 flyover at Kinnick Stadium back on November 20, 2010, the Air Force has finally come down on the pilots. When Iowa hosted Ohio State, the university thought a military flyover would be a patriotic way to conclude the pregame festivities. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to the fans, the squandering created an unnecessary risk for all those who attended by flying too close to the ground. Maj. Christopher Kopacek was the flight...

The Big 10 flexes its muscles

Looking back before last season, the Big 10 failed miserably come post-season play. However, this season the Big 10 is looking very strong despite struggles from yester-year. On Tuesday, Iowa took down #12 Missouri 27-24 in the Insight Bowl and on Wednesday Illinois, surprising to some, dominated Baylor 38-14 in the Texas Bowl. The conference is starting to show that it is finally out of its slump and returning back to elite status. To the true fan, this turn-around...

A doobie-ous honor

Iowa’s RB Adam Robinson was just charged with marijuana possession confirming a court date on January 5th and placing his Hawkeyes career in limbo. Monday night, Robinson was a passenger in a vehicle that was cruising around Des Moines that was pulled over at about 10:45 p.m. on East 4th Street for failing to have a front license plate. The Iowa state trooper detected the smell of marijuana which prompted a search of the vehicle. Robinson was charged and released...

A QB Controversy in the Making?

QB Denard Robinson, who sprained his right throwing shoulder during a 38-28 loss to Iowa this Saturday, is expected to be healthy for the Wolverines when they face Penn State on October 30th. Coach Rich Rodriguez confirmed that there is no QB controversy and Robinson is still the starter and will play if healthy. For Michigan fans, this may not be a good thing with Michigan 0-2 in conference play. When the shifty Robinson went down early in the 3rd...

Iowa’s Norm Parker puts his best foot forward

Sadly, Iowa defensive coordinator Norm Parker had his right foot amputated last month due to complications from his battle with diabetes. Though he has been hospitalized since September, head coach Kirk Ferentz is anxiously waiting for Parker’s return to spur an Iowa defensive that ranks 4th in the nation allowing only 242.2 yards per game. Ferentz is more than confident that Parker will be back coaching prior to the end of the season and Parker wants nothing more but to...

Injury to Insult

Iowa suffered two losses this past Saturday in Tucson, Arizona. As if  losing 31-24 to the Arizona Wildcats wasn’t enough, the Hawkeyes also lost starting RB Jewel Hampton for the rest of the season, after he tore his ACL in the second half. With only one other bonafied RB on the roster in Adam Robinson, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz is scrambling to find replacements: “We’ve got Adam, and anyone else that wants to volunteer.” Hampton’s career at Iowa has...

Is Kirk Ferentz the most overrated coach in college football? Pt. 2

The first part of this Iowa news series received such a warm reception by Hawkeye Nation, hopefully part two promises more of the same. Apparently, Hawkeye football in Iowa is more popular than corn subsidies. Iowans from Sioux City to Waterloo either left comments or shot-off emails, sticking up for their head coach, with some using a few choice words to do so.  Nonetheless, I would not expect any different from any true college football fan in coming to the aid and defense of their...
