Despite being forced to resign this past Tuesday, I mean fired, former Pittsburgh coach Dave Wannstedt will not go away without a fight. According to defensive coordinator coach Phil Bennett, Wannstedt agreed to be the acting coach when Pitt faces Kentucky in the BBVA Compass Bowl next month in Birmingham, Alabama.
So if you want to see the fiery Wannstedt one last time under the helm, head out to Legion Field on January 8th because on January 9th, Wannstedt will assume a special assistant role to the athletic director Steve Pederson. This is a smart move by Pittsburgh allowing Wannstedt to coach, as it will provide the much needed motivation for his players against Joker Phillips and an offensively talented Kentucky squad.
During his six years at Pitt, Wannstedt amassed a 42-31 record, but the AD had enough after Pitt was shellacked against rival West Virginia 35-10 in the Backyard Brawl. With Wannstedt coaching Pitt one last time, he will have an opportunity to showcase his coaching ability for prospective employers.
