The Texas Longhorns (4-5, 2-4 in Big XII play) continue to run-a-muck in the world of irrelevance and Coach Mack Brown cannot seem to temper the mood. This past Saturday, Kansas State embarrassed the Longhorns with a 25 point beat down in a 39-14 demolishing of Texas. The team is in panic mode dropping 5 of their last 6 games with two top 25 teams left on their schedule (Oklahoma State and Texas A&M). To make matters worse, senior CB Chykie Brown will miss the remainder of the season as he suffered a broken right forearm during the loss. This does not bode well for a defense that is ranked 52nd overall yielding over 23 points/game.
The question remains, why is Texas so bad? Coming into the season, the Longhorns returned 6 starters on offense and 7 on defense from a team that was 13-1 last season playing in the BCS national championship game. Brown has a roster deep in talent and athleticism, but the players lack basic fundamentals: tackling, receiving, passing, blocking, and penalties are killing the team.
There is no denying Mack Brown is one of the best in the business, however, come season’s end, he must clean house starting with offense coordinator Greg Davis. The Longhorns play predictable ball, and it is costing them dearly. The coaches should have pulled Gilbert after his 3rd or 4th interception, but that didn’t happen and we all saw the end result.
To even consider post-season play, the Longhorns have to win 2 of their last 3 games. In any other year, not a problem. The bottom line, Texas is playing well below their capability with no leadership in the huddle and absolutely no motivation. Attitude certainly reflects leadership, and until someone steps up, this will be a tough end to a lost season.
This Saturday’s game against No. 12 Oklahoma State will be aired at 8 p.m. on ABC for everyone to either witness the demise of a once proud program or see a team regroup and finish the season strong. There is no doubt this game will be hard hitting and full of excitement.
