In 2009, Oregon’s LeGarrette Blount was set to take the stage at running back for the Ducks and was predicted by experts to be a 2nd, or at worst, a 3rd round draft pick in the 2010 NFL draft. Obviously, all that was struck down after Blount sucker punched a Boise State player in the Ducks’ opening game of the 2009 season. Blount was immediately suspended from the team and did not return until late in the season and only on a limited basis.
His off-the-field issues coupled by his temper severely impacted him in the 2010 NFL draft which cost him hundreds of thousands of dollars. Even tough several teams kept an eye on him, by the end of the weekend, he was not drafted.
It’s customary for players to sign non-drafted free agent contracts right after the draft and that’s just what he did. Blount and Tennessee Titans’ head coach Jeff Fisher have agreed to terms. Fisher is well aware of Blount’s potential and where he lacks in burst of speed, he makes up in strength.
If Blount actually played the entire 2009 season, it makes you wonder where he would have been drafted. If RBs who weren’t as talented such as Kent State’s Jameson Konz (245th pick) and Buffalo’s James Starks (193rd pick) were drafted, there is no doubt Blount would have been somewhere in the mix. In the meantime, Fisher is giving Blount an amazing opportunity, let’s hope he doesn’t blow it
