The ghost of Barry Switzer seems to be cursing athletes in Norman, Oklahoma. Switzer’s ghost continues to haunt left tackle Donald Stephenson. Stephenson, who was slated to be in the starting rotation for 2010, was picked-up this past weekend for an outstanding municipal warrant. With his second arrest in less than one year, his days on the playing field could be in jeopardy.
At approximately 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 10th, Stephenson was pulled over on East Norman Street for failing to wear a seat-belt. When the officer did a routine warrant search, it was discovered that Stephenson had an outstanding municipal warrant for not paying a prior failure to stop citation and not appearing at his municipal court hearing date. For those two noncompliances, Stephenson was immediately taken into custody where he eventually paid his fine and resolved the warrant issue.
In an ironic twist, about one year ago to this day, Stephenson was arrested over a warrant for failing to pay a speeding ticket. After he posted bond, he was released. However, he did miss the entire 2009 season, the exact reason was never released by the program, but presumably it was a result of certain off-the-field issues (i.e., his arrest).
With his second run-in with the law, will Coach Bob Stoops throw down the hammer or brush this off Switzer style as he is short starting left tackles. Only time will tell, but Stephenson should be grateful that there is no talk about him facing another year of suspension.
