Houston football coach Kevin Sumlin received a late Christmas gift earlier this week. Fresh off the heels of one of Houston’s best football seasons, Sumlin was awarded a contract extension that will keep him at Houston through the 2015 season. The contract still must be approved by the Texas Board of Regents, but barring any unexpected setbacks, the deal should be made official on Monday.
Sumlin’s name had quite a bit of buzz a few weeks ago for a few coaching vacancies, but he decided that it’d be best for him to stay at Houston. Sumlin is a good coach, his Cougars reached as high as #12 in the AP poll this season. Houston got off to a red hot start but fizzled around the halfway mark of the season.
Nonetheless, Houston is a legitimate team, and it shouldn’t surprise many people if they are one of the teams contending for an at-large BCS bowl berth next season.
