Meyer's rants turn into a fine

Urban Meyer’s public outrage with SEC officiating has just earned him a $30,000 fine (less than 1% of his $4 million annual salary). The fine is related to public comments made after the Georgia game regarding an alleged late non-call hit on his son-he-never-had Tim Tebow.

Meyer was outraged by the non-call and publicly expressed his frustration over the officiating. This lack of self control ended up costing him money, but fortunately the conference did not include a suspension as well.

The fine is based on the SEC’s code of ethics which specifically state, “Bylaw 10.5.4: that the coaches, players and support personnel shall refrain from public criticism of officials. The league’s Athletics Directors and Presidents and Chancellors have made it clear that negative public comments on officiating are not acceptable.”

In response to the violation, Meyer issued an apology and then drafted a check. Meyer’s antics landed him at #2 for the highest SEC fine paid right behind Kentucky, when the school was fined $50,000 in Oct. of 2007 after fans stormed the field following the Wildcats’ upset of LSU. See, it’s not always good to be first.
