Deion Sanders doesn't forget his roots, and supports Bowden

FSU’s Board of Trustees chair Jim Smith openly called for the end of the Bowden Era. This comment has infuriated Seminole fans throughout the nation and now former players are starting to lash out. One of Bobby Bowden’s most decorated athletes, Neon Deion Sanders, is speaking out in support of keeping Bowden at his current post.

“I hate to hear this nonsense about Coach Bowden, especially from the parties that are stating it,” said the former two-time FSU All-America cornerback in an interview late Monday night. “The Board of Trustees — Florida State wouldn’t be Florida State without Coach Bowden, first of all.

Sanders is in the opinion that since Bowden made this program, he should be able to leave on his own terms. He further commented that Bowden is more of a manager and he doesn’t call all the plays and doesn’t make all the traditional coaching decisions. Therefore, Bowden shouldn’t take all the blame.

Smith continues to make enemies regarding the future of Coach Bowden as he recently stated he wants to finalize Jimbo Fisher’s contract because Terry Bowden “has made in the Alabama press that we [Northern Alabama] are going to magically find $5 million to pay Jimbo Fisher off so his dad can continue to coach.” Of course, Terry Bowden states these comments were taken out of context.

Either way, Smith has turned this coaching issue into a real nightmare and he needs to do the right thing to cure the animosity created. The Matador suggests that perhaps Smith resign from his post and let Deion Sanders take control.
