10 Colleges With the Most Powerful Coaches

Ideally, colleges should be well-known, desirable, and popular because of the high quality of educational resources they offer students and other members of the community. Yet, here in the U.S. that’s not always the case. Many schools’ academic programs are eclipsed by the overwhelming popularity of their sports teams, and for better or worse that has made the coaches and head administrators of these teams incredibly powerful figures that dominate what has now become a billion-dollar industry for colleges...

Is Kirk Ferentz the most overrated coach in college football?

When the topic of overrated college football coaches comes up, names such as Jim Tressel, Mark Richt, Rich Rodriguez and Les Miles are often tossed around. Out of these four coaches, two, (Tressel and Miles) have a BCS National Championship trophy to show. However, Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz is rarely mentioned in such conversations. Why is this? I get that he and Iowa have always been media darlings, and I understand his Hawkeyes have been the proverbial fly in the ointment for Penn State...

FSU Ponders the Heisman

As the Bobby Bowden era fades in the hands of Jimbo Fisher, Florida State strives to reclaim its dominance of yesteryear. To stir up the hype and to get the fans excited about FSU football, the university launched its official Christian Ponder for Heisman campaign. Bobby Bowden goes to bat for Sammie Smith

Bobby Bowden may not be coaching the Seminoles anymore, but he is certainly going to step up to the plate when his alums are in need. This was seen when former Florida State RB Sammie Smith wanted to restore his civil rights after serving his prison sentence. In Florida, convicted felons cannot vote or own a weapon unless the individual gets a full or conditional pardon from the Clemency Board. So after 7 years behind bars for a federal...

Amato is ready to coach again

Coach Chuck Amato refuses to let his bout with cancer stop him from continuing his passion of coaching college football. The former Florida State assistant coach is doing extremely well and is showing signs of normalcy after tackling months of therapy for a cancerous tumor in his tonsils. Amato is slowly bouncing back from the treatment and is starting to eat solid foods again. Though Coach Chest (Amato’s nickname) lost over 20 pounds during this fight, he has not...

The NCAA Strips Florida State

It’s official. The Florida State Seminoles will be forced to vacate 12 of its wins, five from the 2006-07 season and seven from the 2007-08 season. As part of the NCAA’s punishment, the school will be required to forfeit any trophies won during those seasons. Not that it’s an eye stopper at the Rick Losco Trophy Room, but this means the school must return its Emerald Bowl trophy back to the appropriate sponsor. Other teams facing sanctions were men’s and women’s...

FSU’s Appeal is Denied

Bobby Bowden’s New Year’s gift from the NCAA–a rejection letter. Rumors are speculating that the NCAA has rejected Florida State’s appeal in lieu of the school’s academic cheating scandal. For Bowden, this means that he may lose up to 14 of his 389 career victories. The exact number will be determined and enforced after a complete examination of every game in which ineligible players played. This news would be more meaningful if Florida State didn’t push Bowden to retirement....
