Freshman QB Matt Barkley (Fr. 6’2, 230 lbs.) is getting his chance to shine during Southern Cal’s preseason camp as projected started Aaron Corp is nursing a swollen left knee.
Corp impressed Pete Carroll during spring ball and was slated to get the starting job over Barkley and Arkansas transfer Mitch Mustain. Now sidelined, the Trojans, for now, have placed Barkley under center.
Barkley, so far, has impressed Carroll and QB coach Jeremy Bates. For a player his age, Barkley plays smart and mature with a gun of an arm. He was hitting the deep ball all throughout camp during Corp’s absence this week.
Though Corp is scheduled for an MRI today, he is still the starting QB and the position is Corp’s to lose. Afterall, Barkley isĀ a true freshman and has never taken a snap at the college level.
