Joe Paterno greeted Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald before he went to coach from the press box.

Joe Paterno reached a historical milestone this evening by defeating Northwestern for his 408th career win tying the late legendary Grambling coach Eddie Robinson for total career victories. Penn State’s 34-24 win was in true Joe Paterno fashion who drew up a well balanced attack on offense and a suffocating run-stopping defense. The offense amassed 389 total yards with 192 yards in the air and 197 yards on the ground. Meanwhile, the defense stopped the Northwestern’s ground game holding both RBs to a total of 82 yards.

Though Joe Paterno was coaching from the press box, it did not take away from the spirit of the offense who came out strong scoring 27 first-half points while the defense held the Northwestern’s ground game to under 100 total yards.

QB Matt McGloin took every snap tonight completing 17/26 passes for 2 TDs and 0 INTs. RB Silas Redd shredded Northwestern’s defense averaging 9.1 yards per carry scampering for 164 total yards and 1 TD.  The defensive front swarmed Northwestern’s Dan Persa all evening forcing sacks, rushed plays, and a costly INT.

Joe Paterno, who is coaching in his 46th season, is a true ambassador of the game who has a quiet but dangerous 7-1 Nittany Lions football team. Penn State faces a struggling Illinois team on Saturday.

Congratulations to Joe Paterno and the Nittany Lions.
