Ralph Friedgen airs his dissatisfaction with Maryland
Former head coach Ralph Friedgen was terminated last year despite being named ACC Coach of the Year and producing gunslinger Danny O’Brien, the ACC Rookie of a year. The former Terrapin is finally speaking out on the topic of Maryland and needless to say, it’s not pleasant.
Friedgen appeared on Baltimore’s WNST with host Glenn Clark early this week. During an exchange of questions, Clark asked Friedgen about watching Maryland football. Friedgen’s response, “I could care less about Maryland. I’ve burned my diploma. I’m flying a Georgia Tech flag right now.” Friedgen is referring to his loyalty to Georgia Tech as he was an offensive coordinator for the Yellow Jackets in the late 80’s and late 90’s. Friedgen continued by questioning Maryland pride as the school failed to show him any after all the sacrifices he made.
During his coaching days he made Maryland football relevant. In 10 years as head coach, Maryland went bowling seven times and came away with five victories with an overall record of 75-50. To put this monumental feet into perspective, 10 year’s prior to Friedgen’s hire, Maryland only had one winning season and no bowl game appearances.
It’s never a good idea to bash your former employer, but it’s certainly understandable why Friedgen continues to have a chip on his shoulder when it comes to Maryland.
