Maryland’s redshirt freshman QB Danny O’Brien became the first Terrapin to win the coveted ACC Rookie of the Year award. The 6’3, 215 lbs O’Brien easily won with landslide numbers taking 54 of the possible 61 votes. He is the key reason why Maryland boasts an 8-4 record and flirted for the Atlantic Division Title well into the season.
The Kernersville, North Carolina, native had a stellar season passing for 2,257 yards with 21 TDs and only 6 INTs off of 315 passing attempts. Not only did he spark new life to a dying program, O’Brien single handily saved Coach Ralph Friedgen who was arguably on the hot seat this season after going a paltry 2-10 last year. Because of Friedgen’s remarkable turn around, he was recently named the ACC Coach of the Year. This is the second time he was distinguished with this honor.
Though Maryland has not accepted any bowl invitations as of yet, Friedgen and O’Brien have put the Terrapins in an ideal spot to land a top tier-bowl.
