The University of Maryland is feeling the constraints of the economy and is taking several steps to try and stay afloat. The Maryland athletic department recently decided to cut $301K from their football budget. This comes at a time when numerous schools such as Virgina Tech and Miami have taken the same route with the hopes of cutting their costs. First to go for the Terrapin football team will be round-trip charted flights to Duke, NC State, and Wake Forest this fall.

With a story fitting for daytime television drama, the K-State vs. Ron Prince battle continues. Recently dismissed former Wildcat coach Ron Prince, along with his attorneys, are asking that Kansas State University pay him $3 million in additional damages for “wanton and malicious misconduct.” Prince, who went 17-20 during his 3-year tenure as head coach at KSU, had an alleged secret agreement with then-athletic director, Bob Krause, giving Prince $3.2 million, with payments starting in 2015 and ending in 2020. Maryland’s Ralph Friedgen was battling Kansas coach Mark Mangino for the heaviest coach alive title last season. Don’t look now but the Fridge has dropped 105 lbs since the off-season courtesy of his new diet. Friedgen weighed well over 300 lbs. at one point and says he started the diet to prevent health concern complications that come along with being overweight as he gets older. A construction conflict with Florida Atlantic University’s new football stadium could force the Owls to play their September 11th, 2010 contest against Michigan State at either Chicago’s Soldier Field (Bears) or Detroit’s Ford Field (Lions). With construction not expected to be completed on the stadium until 2011, FAU officials are exploring contingency plans to host the game. In addition to Soldier and Ford Fields, Land Shark Stadium (Dolphins) in Miami is also being looked at as a potential site for the game....
Bill Snyder, the architect of what some consider the greatest turnaround in college football, has given himself and his coaching staff a deadline to name K-State’s starting quarterback for the 2009 football season. Snyder wants to name a starting quarterback by August 29th, a week before the Wildcats’s season opener against UMass. The Jim Thorpe Award was first given out in 1986 to Baylor defensive back Thomas Everett. The award is given to the nation’s best defensive back. Past Thorpe Award winners include Bennie Blades, Deion Sanders, Charles Woodson, and Terrance Newman. Last year’s winner was Ohio State’s Malcolm Jenkins.
