The University of Maryland is feeling the constraints of the economy and is taking several steps to try and stay afloat. The Maryland athletic department recently decided to cut $301K from their football budget.
This comes at a time when numerous schools such as Virgina Tech and Miami have taken the same route with the hopes of cutting their costs. First to go for the Terrapin football team will be round-trip charted flights to Duke, NC State, and Wake Forest this fall. According to the Baltimore Sun, the Terps will travel to Duke via bus both ways. They are currently working on a plan that will allow them to travel by plane one way, and by bus the other, for games at NC State and Wake Forest. This move will save the athletic department an estimated $80,000 alone. Another change being made by the Terps is the implementation of compact disc media guides opposed to printed booklets. The estimated savings from that is expected to be around $100,000.
A few Big Ten schools announced that they will be doing the same with their media guides this fall as well. I wonder if Maryland will turn down another Roady’s Humanitarin Bowl trip to Boise Idaho this winter as part of their cost saving efforts. I’m not too sure…
