Stafon in good spirits

Thanks to Matt Hinton over at Rivals, we have photographic evidence that Stafon Johnson is in better spirits after almost crushing himself to death from a freak weightlifting accident. Isn’t it good to see his teammates being supportive and isn’t even better to see Stafon up and about. God bless the young Trojan.

Fired Coach files EEOC Complaint

Race is always at issue whether you want to talk about it or not, especially in the college football world. This past Friday, former Clark Atlanta University football coach, Ted Bahhur, has had enough and filed a complaint against president Carlton Brown and AD Tamica Jones for racial-discrimination with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Bahhur, who is white, stated he was fired because of the color of his skin and that Brown, who is black, facilitated a series of racial events...

It’s about time

Cody Hawkins has been given every single chance to perform this season and–surprise surprise– has failed miserably. His coach and father continued to start Hawkins despite his terrible 2009 campaign. This season, Hawkins has an aplatry 1-4 record throwing 9 TDs and 9 INTs. For Colorado, nepotism was not such a bright idea. Even with a strong father-and-son bond, Coach Dan Hawkins has finally recognized that it’s time to move on. It looks like QB Tyler Hansen will start calling the shots from under center.  During...

Hartline out, who’s in?

It’s a sad day for you Wildcats fans. It looks like starting QB Mike Hartline may be out for the remainder of the season. Hartline suffered a devastating knee injury during Saturday’s loss to South Carolina 26-28. The results of the MRI have not been released, but all evidence is pointing to a torn MCL. Even though some fans have been calling for his replacement, from a players’ perspective the Wildcats are losing their top QB. Let’s hope for...

What comes around, goes around

Michigan State’s Glenn Winston finally got what he deserved. If you don’t recall, Winston was the RB who beat the snot out of a Michigan State hockey player, A.J. Sturges.  The beat down earned Winston six months in jail plus probation. He was also indefinitely suspended from the football team, but, much to the dismay of the student body, Winston was subsequently reinstated after he served his time. Winston was on pace for a successful return as he has...

Erickson down, but not out

Arizona State’s Dennis Erickson stands strong. During the 3rd quarter of today’s game, one of his players, Gerell Robinson, was knocked out of bounds and as a result, accidentally ran into Erickson knocking out the veteran coach. Erickson, albeit a little woozy, got back up, sat on the sidelines, and then continued to coach Arizona State to a 27-14 victory over Washington State. When asked about the hit, Erickson stated, “they knocked me colder than a cucumber, I was...

Tooting at the wrong time

The Grambling State and Prairie View bands seem to play to the beat of a different drum much to the dismay of the SWAC. The conference is coming down on the school’s bands for playing at inappropriate times during last weekend’s football game. The conference has strict rules regarding when bands can play. Apparently, both bands played while the other team’s offense approached the line of scrimmage causing distraction. The rule is very clear that bands must stop once...

“Oops,” says Southern Miss, Wilkes still alive

The Matador originally posted that the Golden Eagles’ punter Peter Wilkes passed away on Friday based on a press release from the Southern Mississippi Athletic Department. Apparently, the release was premature as the school is now retracting the statement–Wilkes is still alive, but in critical condition. ESPN has the latest: Peter Wilkes, a walk-on punter at Southern Miss, is in critical condition at a Memphis, Tenn., hospital after being shot at his home in Union City, Tenn. Regional Medical...
