Coach benches son, Hansen (#9) finally gets to start

Cody Hawkins has been given every single chance to perform this season and–surprise surprise– has failed miserably. His coach and father continued to start Hawkins despite his terrible 2009 campaign. This season, Hawkins has an aplatry 1-4 record throwing 9 TDs and 9 INTs. For Colorado, nepotism was not such a bright idea.

Even with a strong father-and-son bond, Coach Dan Hawkins has finally recognized that it’s time to move on. It looks like QB Tyler Hansen will start calling the shots from under center.  During this week’s loss to Texas, Hansen stepped in after Hawkins threw a pair of interceptions. Hansen went 3 for 5 in the lopsided loss, but it was good enough for the CU coaches to give Hansen the nod for the remainder of the season.

“This has been my dream since I was a little kid. I’ve always wanted to be the starting quarterback for a Big Division I team.”

Hansen’s 2009 starting debut comes against Kansas. His mobility and ability to limit interceptions, will provide another dimension to Colorado’s offense. In any event, Colorado is desperate for a win and at this point in the season they have nothing to lose by mixing up the offense.

Good luck Mr. Hansen and good riddance young Hawkins.
