Vols’ Jacques Smith arrested for assault

The last Saturday in October proved to be a disappointment for the Tennessee Vols and for freshman DE Jacques Smith. After the Vols returned home from their frustrating 38-24 loss to the Gamecocks, some of the players decided to hit the town to forget about their 0-5 record in SEC play. As the Saturday festivities heated up on Cumberland Avenue, Smith and another student began jawing at the mouth about a certain lady friend. The conversation quickly escalated into...

Under Saban, The Tide Has Turned

On January 3, 2007, Nick Saban agreed to become Alabama’s 27th head coach. Both the Tide and Saban were the butt of many jokes across the nation. College football fans from Eugene, OR, to West Palm Beach, FL, were placing bets on how long it would be before Saban left the Crimson Tide for greener pastures elsewhere. Thirty-eight wins later, it looks as if Saban and Alabama are having the last laugh. For a conference that prides itself on being the...

Redemption comes for Auburn’s Newton

After his arrest in Gainesville, FL, in November 2008 on charges in connection with a stolen laptop, Cam Newton’s career as a Division 1 athlete seemed to come to an end. As the legal system played its course, it was learned that Newton had indeed purchased the laptop from a seller he believed was legitimate. However, with his name and reputation tarnished, Newton and his family decided it best to part ways with the University of Florida and transfer from the school. In January 2009, Netwon enrolled at Blinn...

Georgia’s A.J. Green Suspended Four Games by the NCAA

Breaking news from the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Georgia star WR A.J. Green will be suspended for 4 games by the NCAA after allegedly selling his Independence Bowl game jersey for $1,000. Green missed Georgia’s season-opener against Louisiana-Layfayette last week, but many thought the junior would be cleared of any wrongdoing by this week’s game against South Carolina. This comes as a blow to Georgia as Green is the team’s most valuable weapon. Though nagged by injuries forcing...

When Steve Spurrier isn’t taking jabs at Tennessee, he is busy figuring out how to deal with the NCAA breathing down his team’s back. Last night, it looks like the remaining South Carolina football players who were residing in meager accommodations were told to settle their bills, if any, and move out of the Whitney Hotel. Since the coach’s stern directive, several players were seen packing their bags and moving out of the posh Columbia roadhouse. The Whitney is known...

Palmetto State Showdown

Spurrier claimed that it had a negative impact on the recruitment of black athletes. Fast forward to 2010. Black legislators are advising black high...

Things were hotter than usual in Columbia, SC this weekend which resulted in the suspension of SC defensive end Clifton Geathers. Gathers was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and public drunkeness. It’s unclear how much time Geathers will miss but SC will need to have him back on the field soon if they hope to compete in the SEC. Gamecock coach Steve Spurrier
