NCAA says “NO” to Arizona State

Arizona State is coming off of a miraculous win over in-state rival Arizona. After blocking a PAT in double overtime and hoisting the Territorial Cup, the Sun Devils finished the regular season 6-6. According to the NCAA, 6 wins makes you automatically bowl eligible. However, there is one caveat to the rule. If you play two FCS teams (Div. 1-AA) you must have at least 7 wins. Looking at the Sun Devils’ schedule, the team played and easily won...

Agnew’s Agony

If you can’t beat ‘em, sue ‘em. At least that is the approach taken by a former Rice University football player. On Monday, The Owls’ Joseph Agnew sued the NCAA over its policy of limiting athletic scholarships to one-year renewable rewards. The background is quite simple. Agnew, who filed a class-action in California, believes the NCAA and its member schools are violating antitrust laws by limiting the number of scholarships each team can provide. As stated in his complaint,...

Texas out another RB

The Texas Longhorns were informed by the NCAA that senior tailback Vondrell McGee lost his appeal and is deemed academically ineligible to play this season. Coach Mack Brown was disappointed in the outcome and will certainly miss the services of his senior TB who amassed 973 yards and 14 TDs in the 35 games he played as a Longhorn. The university did state that McGee is still enrolled as a student as is scheduled to graduate this December.

Making the Grade

Tulane (1-1) got one of its legs clipped yesterday as freshman kicker Cairo Santos has been declared ineligible pending an NCAA investigation. Santos’ high school transcript and ACT scores are at the heart of the inquiry. Cairo was a Brazilian exchange student who attended St. Joseph Academy in St. Augustine Florida. Apparently, his scores improved so much that it shocked the NCAA clearing house. Santos had an impressive 8 point jump in his ACT score from the first time...

NCAA correct on Masoli denial

Jeremiah Masoli’s eyes popped out of his head like a love-struck cartoon werewolf when he found out Houston Nutt wanted him playing at Ole Miss come 2010. Unfortunately, the NCAA nixed Masoli’s waiver plans and the troubled youth will be forced to redshirt this season if his appeal, which will most likely be, denied. Masoli was attempting to take advantage of the NCAA waiver rule in which a player does not have to sit out a season if he transfers to...

Return to Sender: USC stripped of ’04 Grantland Rice Trophy

The hits just keep on coming for the Trojans. This time the Trojans have the honor of achieving something no other collegiate football championship team has ever accomplished–the revocation of a national championship award. The 2004 Grantland Rice Trophy, awarded by the Football Writers Association of America to the nation’s top college football team, has been stripped from the program. The committee voted and agreed that USC was not deserving of the award due to its most recent NCAA rules...

Masoli has yellow light

Troubled QB Jeremiah Masoli is still waiting for the green light from the NCAA to suit up as opening day nears. Masoli has yet to be cleared for game action by the NCAA but he is still allowed to practice while his request is pending. Coach Houston Nutt isn’t nervous yet, but he has doubts as to whether or not Masoli will be eligible come kick-off time. The season opener against Jacksonville State is a mere 11 days away. Fortunately for...

West Virginia under investigation, again

The NCAA is investigating West Virginia for allegedly dressing players in more than just helmets during their first two days of practice violating the protective equipment policy. It was reported that several players wore vests (lightweight shoulder pads and protective vests) during the first two days of practice which is a direct violation of the NCAA helmet only rule. Rule 17.9.2.3 subsection ‘d’ which states, in full: “During the first two days of the acclimatization period, helmets shall be...
