Monday Morning Quarterback

It’s Monday morning and I’m still recovering from the exciting USA v. Canada hockey game. So while I regroup, I thought I would leave you with some interesting news from this past weekend. First off, a moment of silence for Minnesota State University’s Ben Bundy, a sophomore offensive lineman who passed away at age 20. A message to all athletes–NEVER, and I do mean NEVER, post comments about your head coach on a public social networking site. Oregon’s Jamere...

Mallett breaks foot, will miss spring practice

QB Ryan Mallett’s road to gridiron fame just hit another bump. This time, a broken bone in his left foot is sidelining the gunslinger during spring practice. As a top prospect in 2007, Mallett was supposed to shine for Michigan’s Lloyd Carr and did show signs of greatness while backing up then future NFLer Chad Henne. However, after Carr retired and Rich Rodriguez stepped in and introduced his spread offense to the maize and blue, Mallett quickly left the...

Clausen not toeing with NFL combine

From the day Jimmy Clausen enrolled at Notre Dame, he has been scrutinized from head to toe. For those of you who don’t know him personally, his image and reputation is somewhat skeptical and arrogant. Rolling onto campus in a Hummer limousine to announce that he is going to Notre Dame and will win four titles with the Irish was one of his many antics that rubbed people the wrong way. What made matters worse was the team’s W/L record with Clausen...

Brown is Gator Bait

Florida DT Gary Brown does not know how to celebrate Valentine’s Day. The 19 year old apparently had a bit of cupid’s rage on Sunday. According to the Alachua County Jail records, Brown struck two women who were trying to kick people out of a house party. Brown’s first slap landed smack on one woman’s face and the other slap landed on the other woman’s arm causing minor scratches. As a result of his extra-curricular activities, Brown was arrested...

The U (Ave Maria University) will field a football team in 2011

Ave Maria University is a lost soul in America’s collegiate map. First off, the school’s president Tom Monaghan is about as egotistical as it gets. He nicknamed the school’s mascot the “Gyrenes” which we all know is a nickname for soldiers in the United States Marine Corps. However, the only relationship Ave Maria has with the Marine Corp is that Mr. Monaghan once served in the Marines. The university does not even offer an ROTC program. There is absolutely zero...

No more pointing to God

The NCAA is doing what it can to make college football more dull and uneventful by enacting several new rules for the 2010 season. For example, if you wear eye black, you cannot use words, only solid black; during pregame warm-ups, there must be no opposing players between the 45-yard lines beginning 60 minutes before kickoff; and, there is the elimination of the intentional “wedge” on kickoffs and punts. These are but a few of the new rules coaches and players have to...

UCF slapped with 2 year probation

Is Central Florida’s two year probation a precursor to what Southern California can expect in the next couple of days? The NCAA has determined that the UCF staff committed major recruiting violations to include placing over 200 non-permissible phone calls and about 100 non-permissible text messages from June 2007 to January 2009 to 27 recruits and parents. The responsible parties are former UCF recruiting administrator Ed Marynowitz and former director of player personnel Steve Rubio. Marynowitz moved on and is now...
