The almighty NCAA cracked down on Clemson University last week, claiming that Clemson violated rules. Charges of “improper attire” were thrown against the  Tigers, and head coach Dabo Swinney agreed to cancel two practices as a punishment. Today, we at The Matador learned what the great transgression was that forced the NCAA to crack down on the Tigers. Girdles. Yes, girdles. For those unfamiliar with the term, Webster’s dictionary offers a definition: “something that encircles or confines: as a : an article of...

There was some hitting on and off the field at UNC last month. Donte Paige-Moss, UNC’s highly touted recruit, was arrested last month for punching fellow teammate Hunter Furr during a dorm room altercation. Paige-Moss was charged with simple misdemeanor assault.  Furr was treated at a Chapel Hill hospital the next day for injuries sustained during the fracas. Tar Heel coach Butch Davis has been pretty secretive about how he plans on handling the situation by saying, “We’ve talked about...

Florida’s Secret Weapon?

Tim Tebow may have a little competition this season at the quarterback position. Ok, maybe I shouldn’t go that far, but Florida defensive back Joe Haden has been taking snaps from under center during Gator practices. Haden played quarterback at Friendly (MD) HS and set several state records for passing. He came to Florida in 2007 as an athlete but didn’t get the chance to compete for a quarterback spot. His athletic ability allowed him the rare opportunity to start at...

As The Wildcat World Turns

With a story fitting for daytime television drama, the K-State vs. Ron Prince battle continues. Recently dismissed former Wildcat coach Ron Prince, along with his attorneys, are asking that Kansas State University pay him $3 million in additional damages for “wanton and malicious misconduct.” Prince, who went 17-20 during his 3-year tenure as head coach at KSU, had an alleged secret agreement with then-athletic director, Bob Krause, giving Prince $3.2 million, with payments starting in 2015 and ending in 2020. All of this...

Lions, Owls, and Bears

A construction conflict with Florida Atlantic University’s new football stadium could force the Owls to play their September 11th, 2010 contest against Michigan State at either Chicago’s Soldier Field (Bears) or Detroit’s Ford Field (Lions). With construction not expected to be completed on the stadium until 2011, FAU officials are exploring contingency plans to host the game. In addition to Soldier and Ford Fields, Land Shark Stadium (Dolphins) in Miami is also being looked at as a potential site for the game....

Snyder Sets Deadline To Name QB

Bill Snyder, the architect of what some consider the greatest turnaround in college football, has given himself and his coaching staff a deadline to name K-State’s starting quarterback for the 2009 football season. Snyder wants to name a starting quarterback by August 29th, a week before the Wildcats’s season opener against UMass. The Wildcats are entering this season without school record-setting quarterback Josh Freeman, and as of now, his replacement has yet to be named. Carson Coffman,  Grant Gregory (South Florida transfer),...
