The Maryland Terrapins have seen some significant changes in the front office with the departure of former head coach Ralph Friedgen and the surprise hiring of Randy Edsall. With new top brass calling the shots, change always follows. During the spring game, Edsall boasted a new look offense and defense with numerous players playing different positions. However, with all this change, comes a reason to worry. Maryland QB Danny O’Brien, ACC Freshman of the Year, is set to take the stage as starting QB, but his listed back-up, QB Tyler Smith, decided to pack his bags and transfer.
According to reports, Smith is headed to North Carolina to play for Div. 1AA Elon College. Knowing he was regulated to second-string duties and Maryland was switching to a zone read offense (a combination of running and throwing), Smith figured his services would be better suited elsewhere. Smith considered a few 1AA powerhouse, but fell in love with Elon. Upon visiting the school, Smith was filled with joy as the program is a perfect match for Smith.
“It looks like a great fit for me” “The told me they want me to throw the ball 50 times a game.”
Since Smith is transferring to a 1AA school, he can play immediately and has four years of eligibility.
Now that Smith is a former Terp, Edsall is down to two scholarship QBs, O’Brien and C.J. Brown. The reason for panic, both of these QBs are young with limited experience.
