Former SC Trojan and Villa Park native Aaron Corp has finally won the starting job at Richmond under 1st year head coach Latrell Scott. Corp, who is no stranger to QB battles, ousted sophomore John Laub in a tremendous QB competition.
Corp, a red-shirt junior, transferred to Richmond after two seasons under Pete Carroll. It was anticipated that Corp would be the starter come 2009, but then-freshman Matt Barkley beat out Corp (who suffered a leg injury during preseason). Corp eventually dropped to #3 on the depth chart until he was able to bounce back and overtake Mitch Mustain for 2nd string duties.
When Barkley got injured, Corp was afforded the opportunity to shine at USC. He got the start against Washington going 13-22 for 110 yards in a disappointing loss to the Huskies. After the upset loss, fans got the sense that Aaron Corp would not start again.
Then comes the University of Richmond. Corp saw the opportunity to start and play for a strong Football Championship Subdivision team. He packed his bags and moved out east in hopes of finding new life. What he did find was extremely humid conditions and another QB battle. However, this battle ended differently with Corp earning the ranks of starting QB.
The Richmond Spiders open the season against former head coach Mike London and the new look Virginia Cavaliers on September 4th. All eyes will be on Corp to see if the Parade All-American can continue the success of the Richmond Spiders program.
